What to see in Padenghe sul Garda

Padenghe sul Garda is one of the most charming places on the Brescia side of Lake Garda. If you are planning an excursion or a multi-day holiday in Padenghe but don’t know what to see, don’t worry: here is a short list of the best points of interest.

Padenghe Castle

Padenghe is home to what is considered to be the oldest castle in the entire Valtenesi area: situated on the top of a hill, it dominates the entire town from above. The first construction of the castle dates back to around the year 1000, although over the centuries it underwent several extensions.

The structure we see today, in particular, is the result of a total reconstruction that took place between the 13th and 14th centuries. It is then the restorations carried out at the end of the 19th century and about sixty years ago that allow us to admire the complex in the excellent condition it is in today: the sensation is that of being catapulted into the past.

The castle has a rectangular plan and its walls still contain some dwellings. There are three towers in total, the tallest of which measures about 20 metres and immediately catches the eye of the onlooker.

This tower can currently be visited at certain times and periods of the year, and offers a suggestive view of Padenghe, Lake Garda and other surrounding localities.

Barbieri Palace

This wonderful 18th-century palace is located in the centre of Padenghe, next to the parish church. During restoration work, it was discovered that part of the building actually dates back to the 16th century.

The elegant stone and pebble façade is particularly fascinating, as is the six-columned entrance hall and the majestic marble staircase leading to the first floor. Today, Palazzo Barbieri is owned by the Municipality of Padenghe, and is used as its municipal headquarters.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church of Padenghe. In addition to the beautiful bell tower, the church’s highlight is its interior: meticulously decorated, it consists of a single large nave with no less than eight chapels at its sides, introduced by round arches.

It also houses works of great cultural and artistic value, such as the altarpiece by Paolo Farinati or the marble statues by Antonio Calegari.

What to do in Padenghe sul Garda

The beaches of Padenghe

Like any town overlooking Lake Garda, Padenghe offers its visitors excellent beaches on which to relax, sunbathe or take a swim. All the beaches are gravel and pebbles, and are equipped with bars and kiosks to provide refreshment during the hot summer days.

Here are the main beaches in Padenghe:

-Beach Casina: free beach with paid parking. The Casina Restaurant, with fish specialities, overlooks this beach.

-Lido di Padenghe: free beach with the possibility of hiring umbrellas, sunbeds and even pedalos.

-Lido Copelia: both public and equipped beach, with the possibility of using various facilities and rental services.

SUP course and rental

Stand up paddle (or SUP for short) is a variant of surfing that has become increasingly popular and widespread in recent years. Its peculiarity is that you stand on the board, which is therefore wider than a classic surfboard, and use a paddle to move forward. Just in Padenghe there is Puffin Sup, from which it is possible to both rent equipment and enrol in courses to learn how to practice this fun sport.

Visit to wine cellars

The vineyards of the Valtenesi, where Padenghe is located, are famous for a particular type of vine that only grows in these areas: the Grappello. This particular variety is particularly prized, and is used in the production of all types of wine in the area, including the very famous Garda Classico. So, for wine lovers, a visit with wine-tasting in one of the beautiful wine cellars around Padenghe is certainly recommended.

Museum Workshop of History

This museum of arts and crafts is located in Monte, in the municipality of Padenghe. The project for this museum was initiated more than forty years ago by Gianfranco Zuliani and his father Gianbattista. Visiting it, one can discover countless working tools belonging to the traditions of the past, some dating back as far as three centuries. The museum is open every day and its owner provides a room and a terrace to host aperitifs or dinners, if booked in advance.

Padenghe and surroundings

In the vicinity of Padenghe sul Garda are some of the most prestigious destinations around the lake. Desenzano del Garda, for example, is easily reached either by car (10 minutes) or by bicycle (20 minutes).

On the northern side, however, Padenghe borders the beautiful municipality of Moniga del Garda, beyond which lies the equally interesting Manerba del Garda.

An always valid alternative is to take advantage of the ferry service, from which you can also easily reach the beautiful Sirmione.
