When the fog rises from the lake in late October and the lights of the villages come on early, Garda changes its face: fewer swimmers, more atmosphere. This is when Halloween finds its best stage here, among amusement parks that turn into worlds of thrills and Scaliger castles that seem made for ghost stories.
In this guide we explore what to do on Lake Garda for Halloween: from the Gardaland Magic Halloween programme to ideas for families with children, and on to evening walks among fortresses and castles at dusk. Ready for a spooky (but not too spooky) weekend?

Gardaland Magic Halloween: the park dresses up for thrills
The undisputed star of Garda’s Halloween is Gardaland, in Castelnuovo del Garda, between Lazise and Peschiera. Every autumn the park gets a new look with Gardaland Magic Halloween: themed settings, shows and experiences along the park’s avenues, with an atmosphere that grows ever more spooky until the night of 31 October.
In the 2026 edition the Halloween season is extra long: 51 days, from 12 September to 1 November. The big novelty is Preda, an immersive maze set in a post-apocalyptic Earth straight out of a sci-fi film, where you have to escape the Ravages, fast alien creatures drawn to noise: to make it to the end, the one rule is to stay completely silent. The highlight is the Halloween Party on 31 October, with spooky atmospheres that continue until 1 November.
Dates, opening hours and tickets change every year: before you set off, it is always worth checking the park’s official website. If you want to compare Gardaland with the other parks on the lake, you will find the full picture in our guide to the amusement parks on Lake Garda.
Halloween with kids and the lake’s other parks
Halloween is a festival designed above all for the little ones, and Garda knows how to welcome them. In the themed parks the mood is playful rather than scary, but some experiences, such as immersive mazes in the dark, can be frightening: it is best to choose attractions according to age and to read the park’s guidelines carefully.
Movieland, in Lazise, also has a Halloween special among its events of the year: the calendar changes from season to season, so it is worth checking the dates on the park’s website. For more child-friendly ideas, from beach games to day trips, you will find a complete list in what to do on Lake Garda with children.
Around 31 October, moreover, many municipalities and local associations (pro loco) organise costume parties, workshops and treasure hunts in the old towns. Programmes vary every year and are set close to the date: our advice is to check the websites of the municipalities and tourist offices a few days beforehand.
Autumn castles and villages: the oldest Halloween
For those who prefer the thrill of history to that of theme parks, Garda offers perfect settings. The Scaliger castles, with their crenellated towers overlooking the water, are at their best at sunset, when the light drops and the lake takes on autumn colours.
Sirmione and the Rocca Scaligera
At the entrance to the village of Sirmione stands the Rocca Scaligera, a medieval fortress surrounded by water that closes off the peninsula like a gate onto the lake. In the evening, with the walls lit up and fewer tourists in the little streets, the old town has an almost cinematic charm: we talk about it in more detail in our guide to what to see in Sirmione.
Malcesine and its castle
Further north, the Scaliger Castle of Malcesine looks out over the lake from a spur of rock, its pentagonal tower hanging about 70 metres above the water. A true story with a whodunit flavour also took place here: in 1786 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stopped to sketch the castle and was arrested as a spy, because suspicious locals mistook his sketches for military surveys. The rest of the village, made of alleys and an old harbour, is told in our guide to Malcesine, the old town, the Scaliger Castle and the Monte Baldo cable car.
A Halloween weekend on Garda: how to plan it
The simplest way to enjoy Halloween on the lake is to alternate a moment of fun with a moment of calm. One possible day: morning or afternoon in a themed park, with the kids enjoying attractions and shows; at sunset a stroll in one of the lakeside villages, with the castles lit up; in the evening a quiet dinner on the lakefront, perhaps discovering Lake Garda by night in its autumn version.
If the weather does not cooperate, no fear: rainy days have their own charm and, between museums, castles and indoor parks, there is no shortage of ideas. You will find them in our collection what to do on Lake Garda when it rains.

When to go to Garda for Halloween
The best time depends on what you are looking for. To enjoy the atmosphere of the themed parks, the Halloween season starts as early as September, so there is no need to wait for the last week of October. The weekend closest to 31 October is usually the busiest: those who want to avoid the crowds can choose a weekday or the earlier weekends. For villages and castles, on the other hand, late afternoon hours are the most evocative, but remember that in autumn the opening hours of museums and castles are often reduced compared with summer: it is best to check them before setting off.
Did you know? The name Halloween comes from "All Hallows' Eve", the eve of All Saints' Day: the festival is celebrated on the night of 31 October, before the day dedicated to the saints, and for a few decades it has also reached Italy, where it has won over mainly children.
A (slightly) spooky autumn on Lake Garda
Between dark mazes, castles mirrored in the lake and villages that light up at dusk, Halloween is a great excuse to discover Garda out of season. Whether you choose the themed park, a trip among the Scaliger fortresses or a simple stroll along the lakefront, autumn here always has something special to tell.
When is Halloween celebrated at Gardaland?
Gardaland Magic Halloween is the park’s themed autumn season. In the 2026 edition it lasts 51 days, from 12 September to 1 November, with the Halloween Party on 31 October. Dates, opening hours and tickets change every year: it is best to check the official website before setting off.
Is Gardaland at Halloween suitable for children?
The park offers themed settings, shows and experiences designed for the whole family. Some attractions, such as immersive mazes in the dark, can however frighten the youngest: it is best to choose according to age and to read the guidelines provided by the park.
Besides Gardaland, where can you celebrate Halloween on Lake Garda?
Movieland, in Lazise, also offers a Halloween special. Around 31 October many municipalities and pro loco associations also organise costume parties, workshops and treasure hunts in the old towns: programmes change every year, so it is best to consult the websites of the municipalities and tourist offices.
Which castles can you visit for a different kind of Halloween?
The Rocca Scaligera of Sirmione and the Scaliger Castle of Malcesine are among the most scenic on the lake and look their best at sunset. In autumn opening hours may be reduced compared with summer, so it is best to check them before your visit.
What to do on Garda at Halloween if it rains?
Rainy days have their own charm: you can visit museums and castles, or choose the indoor offerings of the parks. In our guide to what to do on Lake Garda when it rains you will find plenty of ideas.
Is it better to go on Halloween weekend or earlier?
The weekend closest to 31 October is usually the busiest. If you want more peace and quiet you can choose a weekday or the earlier weekends: in the themed parks the Halloween atmosphere starts as early as September.
