Curiosity: The name ‘Moniga’ is said to be associated with the Greek deity Diana Munichia, but there is also the hypothesis that it derives from the Germanic word ‘morn’, meaning ‘exposed in the morning’.

What to see in Moniga del Garda
The territory of Moniga, a wonderful mixture of lake and morainic hills, is home to some structures of great historical and cultural value.
So, here are some tips on what to see in Moniga del Garda:
Historical centre
The centre of Moniga is characterised by the beauty of its narrow, picturesque streets. You can breathe in a medieval atmosphere, especially in the area of the Pozzo, the oldest part of the centre where in the past there was an important well from which to draw water.
In the centre you will also find several restaurants and bars where you can enjoy a glass of the famous Chiaretto.
Moniga Castle
This castle is undoubtedly the best known and most characteristic building in Moniga: built in the 10th century as a defence against the Hungarian invasion, it is still in excellent condition and stands on a slight rise. The reasons for its good state of preservation are to be found in its history: it was never inhabited by a lord and never fulfilled a strategic function; used more as a safe refuge in case of danger, the castle was never the victim of sieges.
The rectangular-shaped walls currently house a number of private dwellings, some of which also have a kitchen garden. The four corners of the walls have small watchtowers with a circular base, while the keep has been adapted as a bell tower for the parish church of San Marino.
Church of San Martino
This is the parish church of Moniga del Garda: founded as a simple chapel dependent on the Pieve di Santa Maria (in the Manerba area), it was consecrated and made independent in 1454. The church of San Martino was later enlarged and renovated in the second half of the 18th century, assuming the Baroque style that we can admire today. There are several references to St Martin, including a small statue of him on the glass façade and one on the back wall of the apse.
Church of Our Lady of the Snow
Also called St Michael’s Church, this small Romanesque church dates back to the 16th century and is located in the countryside, not far from the lake. A small stream runs alongside the building and a row of tall cypress trees rises up, while in the rear area is the municipal cemetery.
The style is very simple and pleasant, the exterior has a gabled façade without plasterwork, while inside there are remains of ancient decorations and paintings from recent times.

Chiaretto Wine Tasting
The territory of Moniga del Garda is famous for the production of Chiaretto, a highly appreciated rosé wine whose flavour and colour are determined by the fact that the must is left in contact with the marc for a short period of time.
If you are passing through Moniga, nicknamed the ‘City of Chiaretto’, we recommend that you visit one of the renowned cellars in the area for a guided tasting of this prized wine. In June, in particular, the Valtenesi in Rosa event is held every year, dedicated precisely to the tasting of the various declinations of rosé wines produced in this area.
The beaches of Moniga del Garda
The coast of Moniga is full of pretty beaches where you can spend hot summer days, cooling off in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Garda.
The most beautiful beaches in Moniga del Garda are:
- Porto Beach: near the harbour of Moniga, it is a free beach where you can also rent umbrellas and sunbeds. Nearby there are newsstands, bars, pizzerias and restaurants.
- Beach San Michele, Beach Zocco and Beach Liner: free, pebbly beaches to the left of the harbour.
- San Sivino beach: on the border between Moniga and Manerba, a narrow free pebble beach.
- Beach Preare: free beach with an area reserved for dogs.
Boat tour
In Moniga del Garda there are several facilities where you can rent a boat. It is not necessary to have a boat licence, as it is not required for some types of boat. On board a small boat you can enjoy the lake in an alternative and completely relaxing way, far from crowded beaches and surrounded by crystal-clear water.

Moniga borders two other locations on the Brescia side of Lake Garda: to the north is Manerba del Garda with its famous Rocca, to the south is Padenghe and its ancient castle. We also recommend visiting these beautiful villages, which are easily reached by car or bicycle without taking much time. In Soiano instead, an inland location also bordering Moniga, there is the Gardagolf Country Club, one of the most prestigious golf courses in Italy.
Alternatively, you could take a ferry to other locations on Lake Garda, such as the beautiful Sirmione.

A4 motorway (Milan-Venice): exit at Desenzano and follow the signs for Salò.
By train
The nearest railway station to Manerba del Garda is Desenzano. From here, you can easily reach Manerba by bus by taking line 07 or 27.

The nearest airports to Manerba del Garda are Brescia’s Gabriele D’Annunzio Airport, Verona’s Valerio Catullo Airport and Orio al Serio Airport (Bergamo). From your chosen airport, you can use public transport services or hire a car to reach Manerba del Garda.

Moniga del Garda offers fun for the whole family; in fact, your children will love playing and swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Garda. We also recommend a pleasant walk along the lakeside promenade to Padenghe, or a visit to the fascinating castle walls.
If, on the other hand, you are willing to move from Moniga, a 40-minute drive will take you to Gardaland and Movieland, two of the most important and popular amusement parks in Italy.
